‘ I have found that books can transport kids to another location.’ Judith has been volunteering as a bedside reader at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust because 2003. After retiring from teaching, Judith wished to continue to utilize her storytelling skills to help children who are poorly. ‘I had constantly enjoyed reading to the kids in school at the end of the day. You might see them visibly unwind and be taken in by the story. I believed this might also apply to children in healthcare facility. I offer on the children’s oncology wards in the medical facility. I have experienced the distraction checking out a story can do to support the staff. The children are little heroes. Mark joined the NHS in his 30s after leaving his family’s business without any formal qualifications, but a drive to make a difference. He began as a psychological health support worker and went on to train as a basic nurse. He certified at 37 and spent the next twenty years gradually climbing up the ladder. ‘ I tried to switch off a bedside lamp and felt like something wasn’t best with me. I understood quickly it was a stroke.’ In July 2023, after an active vacation kayaking and walking, Bob all of a sudden had a stroke. He was zipped air ambulance to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, where he spent four weeks restoring. ‘I used the gym often and did neurorehabilitation online (NROL)’. NROL is a group rehabilitation program for individuals who have actually had a stroke or have other neurological conditions. ‘I had a structured timetable which offered me something to look forward to every week – socially, emotionally and emotionally.’ Bob thanked NHS personnel for ‘the fantastic assistance’ and the ongoing physiotherapy he received. Well done Bob and fantastic work team! Early recognition of stroke signs can save lives. If you see somebody with any signs or symptoms of a stroke, keep in mind to Act F.A.S.T. ‘ Working alongside nurses and seeing the difference they made inspired me to believe, ‘I could do that!” Meet Sharon, a sexual health nurse and non-medical prescriber who started her nursing journey in 1985 at the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital. In 2010 she joined Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust and continues to serve clients in Hertfordshire. ‘I loved assisting individuals and learning about the body, so nursing simply felt right.’ Sharon reflects. Sharon has operated in male infertility, menopause, miscarriage and colposcopy to call a couple of, revealing the large range of locations in which nurses make a difference. ‘Truly, I can’t think about an area where nurses do not make an effect in some kind,’ Sharon admits. On why her function is unique, Sharon explains, ‘The care, compassion, and empathy we bring make the nursing role unique. As client supporters, we assist guarantee their journey is supported, notified, and truly meaningful.’ There are more than 50 different kinds of nursing functions readily available in the NHS.
